Young Children’s Belonging in Finnish Educational Settings: an Intersectional Analysis

Abstract The study draws on a relational and intersectional approach to young children’s belonging in Finnish educational settings. Belonging is conceptualized as multilevel, dynamic, relationally constructed phenomenon. aim of the explore how shaped intersections between macro-, meso-, micro-levels education Finland. data consist policy documents ethnographic material generated programs for children aged birth 8 years. A situational mapping framework used analyze interpret across within systems levels (macro-level; meso-level; micro-level). findings show that landscape which are characterized by tensions similarities differences, majority minorities, continuity change, authority agency. Language used, practices enacted, positional power emerge (re)sources through (un)belonging actively produced.
